THE MESSENGER

FROM THE HEART OF THE LITTLE FISH

To Your House

“ALL OF THEM WERE FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT”

That’s how Pentecost began. Sitting together in the Upper Room waiting for the promise of the Holy Spirit the disciples gathered in prayer. Luke says, “Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. And all were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages as the Spirit enabled them.”

It’s amazing what one can do when under the power of God. Peter is the one most Christians like to identify with because of the way he was. He could be bull-headed, someone who would speak his mind. A burly fishermen we could say, maybe a little ‘salty’ at times. But Jesus saw something in him, like he sees in all of us. He saw Peter’s potential, not what he was. He saw what he could become when under the control of the Holy Spirit. At Pentecost, my, what a great sermon he gave as hearts were touched, and new life offered, and over 3,000 folks were miraculously changed in a twinkling of an eye. Let us not forget what Luke adds to that first evangelistic meeting. God kept adding to their numbers daily, and the followers came together to share what they had, to pray, to study, and to participate in the Lord’s Supper. The church was full of life and they were full of joy and hope.

So it was with the other disciples as well. That Upper Room experience transformed each person who was there. No more hiding and being afraid. They came out to proclaim God’s message unafraid of what was waiting for them. They spoke with boldness, did amazing things like Jesus said they would. This group of what one might have originally called misfits, now were proclaimers of the hope one could have through believing in the One who died on the cross for the world. The church was alive, and it was fruitful in its mission and with its message. Christ is alive and there is power in the precious Name of Jesus.

The church today needs the renewal of that same power. It’s there in us when we receive Christ. We just need to turn on the switch and watch what God will do. The power of the Holy Spirit allows us to sing God’s praises and to speak to others about what God is doing in our lives. The message of the church lives on through you and me today. The work of the Holy Spirit continues to change lives and the Kingdom of God can still grow. The message hasn’t changed. Only the messengers have changed. It’s you and me. We are the new apostles of Jesus who are given the task to share the Good News with the world. We have been commissioned to “Go, into all the world bringing my name, my vision, my hope, my forgiveness, my salvation, my power, my love, to the world.” (Littlefish translation)

Every year we look for revival in our churches, our denomination. But first and foremost, it needs to begin in our own lives. Let’s pray that God will get hold of us and that our hearts will be set on fire for the faith that God will bring a revival to our church that will spread to other churches. IT CAN HAPPEN! IT NEEDS TO HAPPEN! Let’s be Peters and Pauls and spread God’s love. Will you join with me and take on the task that God calls you to do?
