FROM THE HEART OF THE LITTLE FISH

THE JOURNEY OF THE NEW YEAR

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning…. The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.” the Apostle John writes.

2018 is knocking on the door ready to flex its muscles. We never know what to expect year after year. There are good things, and there will be some rough spots. I already have times of joy as I’ve scheduled two weddings, one for Chelsea Nichols, who will graduate this year and begin her work as a DOCTOR. The second is our granddaughter Kimberly’s wedding in July. Looking forward to both celebrations. Every year we also enter the new year with new hope and expectations.

Christ’s birth was the beginning of the journey of our faith, and each year when we turn to a new year that means the old is gone and the new is starting. It’s putting behind the failures of the last year and starting with a clean slate. We like to think of it as a fresh beginning, wondering what it will bring. We shut the door on the previous year and enter with new hopes and expectations. New Year’s Eve the ball drops as the crowd counts down…. “10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1” and the celebration begins as we have 365 fresh new days to see the hand of God at work.

What will 2018 be like? God only knows. But what we count on is this, whatever we face, God is always with us. He dwells with us full of grace and truth. We don’t enter the New Year without hope. We enter it with the One who has made each new day possible.

As you ring in the new and I pray that the blessings of God will be plentiful. I hope you and I will see the presence of God in new ways in each new day. May this truly be a wonderful year full of hope and joy. Will you join with me welcoming in 2018? With love and peace, let the journey begin!

HOLIDAY BOOK DRIVE

“On behalf of the “Gift of Reading” holiday book drive, I wish to thank each of you who donated new children’s books or provided money so that I could purchase some.

With this being our last year to coordinate this endeavor, we were able to give 2 books to over 4800 children within 17 agencies. Over the last 8 years the book drive has collected and delivered over 30,000 new books to children. It is truly our hope that many of these children will become lifelong readers or learn to love reading, and believe that reading is the key to success. Thank you for your continual generosity!”

THANK YOU, CONGREGATION, for our Christmas gift from you! We will be enjoying 5 days in the sun in Destin, Florida at the beautiful MOYNAHAN condo. Thanks, too, to Sandy and John. We will probably plan on going in October. We appreciate you!

January 21 at 5:00 p.m. This is our opportunity to get together and enjoy an evening of fellowship and, of course, PIE! Come and bring a pie or two to share and choose your favorite. It’s sure to be there! Don’t make pies? Come anyway and join in the evening fun!

NEW ADVENT/CHRISTMAS BANNERS

POLLY WISE has gifted this church with two more beautiful banners for the sanctuary. One has the lighted Advent Candles and the other with the Christ Child that says SAVIOR and WE BELIEVE! Words cannot adequately describe these handmade works of art. You have to come and see them to appreciate the beauty and the message they convey!

AN EARLY CHRISTMAS GIFT… MABEL WREN COONROD arrived on Sunday, December 3rd to the delight of two big sisters, LAYNE and HADLEY, and the parents, JESSICA and GAVIN COONROD. Baby Mabel weighed in at 7 lbs. 2 oz. Grandparents, TERESA & STEVE BENNER are thrilled to welcome this little baby girl.

JULIE & BRADY MOHAN… We are anticipating any moment the news of your expected baby boy!

CONGRATULATIONS, LORI BENNER, on completing your Bachelor’s Degree while still working full-time and being an integral part of this church as well as the huge Benner family! Now Lori will be starting on her Master’s Degree in Health Law, through Loyola University, working on-line and on campus in Chicago! What an accomplishment! God’s blessings!

SENIOR POTLUCK is Tuesday, January 2nd at Noon. Come and begin the new year with your friends and family. Bring a dish to share and your own table service. Coffee and tea are provided. All are welcomed!

UNITED METHODIST WOMEN meet at 7:00 p.m. on the second Wednesday each month. You are invited to come and be a part and see what mission fields we support.

TRUSTEES meet on Tuesday, the 23rd at 6:30 p.m.

JANUARY/FEBRUARY ADMINISTRATIVE COUNCIL is Wednesday, the 24th at 7:00 p.m. with PRAYER at 6:30 p.m.

AFTER-CHURCH COFFEE AND STUDY GROUP – We will begin a new book by Max Lucado on Sunday. This one is called ANXIOUS FOR NOTHING (Finding calm in a chaotic world). We read a chapter together each week and discuss how Max relates the Scriptures to our everyday lives and how we can be more aware of God working in and around us! Come and join us! Everyone is welcomed.

SAVE THE BOOKS you’ve already read that are taking up space and bring them to the church for our Annual Book Sale which is on the first Saturday in February. That’s February 3rd this year. We always have a good selection of children’s books, how-to books, cookbooks, biographies and novels.
